Frequently Asked Questions

 

What is the difference between CEUs and graduate credits?

CEU's are continuing Education Units. We are an approved CEU provider for the Maine State department of Education. All courses are 45 clock hours or 4.5 CEU's acceptable for re-certification. We also offer 3 college graduate credits for all courses from Plymouth State University at for 145. per credit. (3 credit course $435.)

What if I need an additional copy of my transcript for a course?

We will be happy to provide an additional transcript. There is a $10 fee for this service. Contact us with your name, the name of the course, and the dates the course was taken to request one.

What is a Guided Independent Study (GIS)?

Some AICE courses may be taken as a tutorial under the guidance of one of our Instructors and may earn 3 graduate credits or 4.5 CEU credits.

  • They require the same level of work as in weekend or summer intensive sessions with a minimum of 45 clock hours of study.

  • They use an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP) in conjunction with the course syllabus.

  • It is a “Guided” process. The Instructor is an active facilitator in the process of the study.

  • These courses are acceptable for teacher recertification and continuing education.

How does a Guided Independent Study (GIS) work?

  • GIS students conference with the Instructor in an initial face-to-face session in areas of the state such as Portland, Bangor, and Aroostock County.

  • There are usually 3-4 follow-up sessions with the Instructor throughout the course.

  • Phone conferences are possible for students in Canada and other locations.

  • GIS students will develop and submit to the instructor an Individual Learning Plan (ILP).

  • It is self-paced. The student will work for a minimum of two to three months and maximum of six months on the study.

  • Reading and writing assignments are the same level of work for the weekend and summer sessions.

  • Students may participate in the AICE at Tapped In Virtual Classroom for discussions with the instructor and other participants.

  • Work will include reading, reflection, writing a process journal, and a project.

  • Weekly email correspondence with the instructor is required throughout the study. Email correspondence is due weekly by Sunday Noon.

  • A final summative paper of learning will complete the study.

  • Forty-five (45) clock hours of study are required to satisfy the issuance of three semester credits.

Does AICE offer online courses?

Currently, there are two Guided Independent Studies offered as online courses: “Successful Strategies for Educational Technicians K-12” and “Supervising, Training, and Evaluating Educational Technicians.”

Do Guided Independent Study and Online courses cost the same as scheduled classes?

Yes, all courses are $650 for 4.5 CEU's and $750 for Teaching the Exceptional Child in the Regular Classroom, a state mandated course, add $145 per credit if you wish to earn college graduate credit.
